‘BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre’ – PC Review

3 min read

The name of this game speaks for itself, and first impressions are always important. Meet Lou, the precious son of Satan. In a day and age when humans have conquered Hell he spends his time drinking MILK at a bar to forget his woes. Inspired, and flat broke, he takes up arms in a valiant attempt to reclaim his throne in the game aptly named Big Drunk Satanic Massacre (BDSM), developed and published by Big Way Games. Be forewarned: This game contains mature content, no matter which way you turn.

As a free roam, top-down shooter, Lou will take on some of the most grotesque creatures during his conquest using a hand gun, a shot gun, a machine gun, and a few more creative weapons. As enemies are defeated, ranging from imps to giant demons with chainsaws, they drop red orbs that Lou collects to gain Rage. Once the bar is full and activated Lou becomes invincible and sprays a ridiculously long stream of molten white fire at his foes. Money will also drop in the form of green dollar signs. Collect as much as possible to keep upgrading special abilities and weapons with the salesman Lou will frequently encounter.

There’s a great deal to be said for attention to detail in creating and developing a video game. Lou takes on the appearance of a horned devil with hooves, which means his gait needs to be adjusted. The strut is designed perfectly, easy to determine he doesn’t walk on straight legs. Many creatures possess unique details, so pay close attention to the extra effort the developers gave to their game. There may not be anything spectacular to say about the quality of the graphics, the intended effect is achieved.

Lou’s direction is controlled through the configurable keyboard controls, while the reticle is aimed with the mouse. This means he can walk in one direction while aiming and facing in the complete opposite. A gamepad could be used instead, but both sets of controls are configurable.

In each level design there are small mobs like trash, but then some rooms will be blocked off upon Lou’s entrance, or escape. The player will need to fight off a certain amount of waves of enemies before the room will unlock and allow you to progress. Hordes can be overwhelming at times. When Lou is low on health, be sure to have him drink MIILK to recover. Watch out, too much too often and he’ll be left vulnerable for a few seconds to regurgitate.

One aspect of BDSM that I will not spoil is the comedy. This game is full of raunchy humor designed for those with darker souls. Some will find deep appreciation for the innuendos and references bluntly apparent in character designs and dialogue. For others, there is always the option to dial back the more offensive content.

A soundtrack of heavy metal themes nicely accompanies the demonic style of BDSM, and it does vary per area so the player won’t be listening to the same guitar riffs and drum beats throughout the entire game. Every gun makes a different sound effect, every enemy has a different death cry and animation, and even Lou’s footsteps are heavy like hooves. Voice acting is there as needed, with Lou randomly commenting for effect during his hellish slaughter.

BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is game of nonstop action, which offers the challenge of tact and timing as a top-down shooter. Linear but free roaming like a dungeon crawler, the player sets the pace. While reclaiming the underworld from humans and their corporations, Lou will also encounter his fair share of ladies to aid or rescue, so don’t forget to strut your stuff and impress.  Enjoy every jab the game takes at the forbidden side of life.

Final Score: 4/5
